During the mid-90s, the horror genre was witnessing something of a barren patch until Scream came along and re-ignited the genre with the sort of hair-raising and spine-chilling plot lines that previous genre promoters would not have imagined. Its success over the years unleashed a barrage of copycat films, and while some were good, some were not so great. Thanks to the commitment of its producers, subsequent installments of the Scream franchise have continued to provide a steady supply of top-notch slasher films.
After the box office success of Scream (2022), it was only normal that it earned a sequel.Scream VI marks the return of several iconic franchise survivors, including Scream 4 fan-favorite character Kirby Reed. Not drifting too far away from its original premise, Scream IV will see Woodsboro’s survivors face off against Ghostface, but this time New York City is the venue of the mayhem. There is ample throat-slashing, petrifying scenes that leave the streets of New York blood-soaked, it's simply Fright on steroids.
We've put together this handy guide that goes into detail about the most important characters. So, shall we begin then?
Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers
After it was announced that Neve Campbell will not be on Scream 6 over a pay dispute, Courtney Cox assumed the mantle of the only actor to appear in every movie of the Scream franchise. At the inception of the film in 1996, Weather was the fiery journalist who takes it upon herself to investigate and stop the Ghostface murders. Her exploits bring her to national prominence, as she has survived every Ghostface onslaught. Stabbed and shot multiple times, she is more or less the proverbial cat with nine lives (maybe six lives).
In Scream VI we learn that Gale is initially at odds with Sam and Tara, after publishing a book that made the latter look mentally unstable. Fortunately, it's not too long before she once again teams up with the core four.
Cox is popular for her role as Monica Geller on the NBC sitcom Friends. A Screen Actors Guild Award winner, she played Julie Winston in the action-fantasy Masters of the Universe and Melissa Robinson in the comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Her other movie credits include 3000 Miles to Graceland, The Opposite Sex and How to Live with Them, Commandments, and The Runner.
Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter
Melissa Barrera plays Sam Carpenter, the illegitimate daughter of serial killer Billy Loomis. Sam returns home to Woodsboro to take care of her sister Tara who was a victim of a Ghostface attack. Scream 5 ended with Sam repeatedly stabbing her boyfriend Richie after she realized he was one of the dreaded Ghostface killers.
In Scream VI, Sam is now living with her sister Tara in New York City. Unfortunately, she has also become the center of an internet conspiracy claiming that she was the mastermind behind the murders in Woodsboro and manipulated Richie into becoming Ghostface. She has now become increasingly over-protective of Tara, living in fear of Ghostface's return.
A Mexican actress who started her acting career in her native country before crossing over to Hollywood is known for her lead role in the Starz drama series Vida. She played Vanessa in the musical drama In The Heights.
Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter
Tara Carpenter is the younger half-sister of Sam, who at the end of Scream 5 realizes that her best friend Amber is the Ghostface who attacked her.
In Scream VI, Tara is now a freshman in college, living in New York. Unlike her older sister, Tara is less paranoid and wants to move on and live a normal life again, but Sam's overprotective nature has prevented that from happening.
Jenna Ortega has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood in the 15 months after the previous film. In 2022 alone she starred in films such as The Fallout, X, American Carnage, and Studio 666. She had her biggest role to date this past November in the Netflix Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday where she played the titular role, which led to her receiving a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy.
Hayden Panettiere as Kirby Reed
Introduced in Scream 4, Kirby Reed was romantically interested in Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin), who she met at a friend's party. Before the relationship takes off fully, Kirby realizes that Charlie and her best friend Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) were the new Ghostface killers. Charlie stabs her towards the end of Scream 4 and that was the last time she was seen.
In Scream VI, Kirby now works for the FBI and assists Sam and Tara in taking down the new Ghostface. It's also revealed that Kirby and Sam have already met, as Sam was a freshman in high school while Kirby was a senior.
Known for her lead role as Claire Bennet on the NBC superhero series Heroes, Hayden Panettiere also starred in the musical drama series Nashville as Juliette Barnes. Her other movies include I Love You, Beth Cooper, Remember the Titans, The Forger, and Custody.
Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin
Mindy Meeks-Martin embraces the horror genre as a way to stay one step ahead of Ghostface. After she was stabbed by Ghostface while watching the in-universe movie Stab, she is last seen towards the end of Scream 5 being rushed to the hospital.
In Scream VI, Mindy continues to serve as the comic relief pointing out the new horror set-up that she and her friends have become entangled in this time.
Outside the Scream franchise, Jasmin Savoy Brown is most known for her role as the teenaged Taissa in the Showtime series Yellowjackets.
Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin
An athlete at Woodsboro High, Chad is Mindy’s twin brother and Liv’s boyfriend. In Scream 5, it became obvious he was the least equipped to deal with the horrors of Ghostface. Despite his skepticism, he is fiercely protective of his girl Liv yet is helpless to prevent attacks from Ghostface.
In Scream VI, Chad now is attending the same New York college as Tara and Mindy and early in the film it is revealed that he has developed feelings for Tara.
Mason Gooding is the son of Academy Award Winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. After his breakout role as Nick in Booksmart, Gooding has been a part of various films and shows including Star Trek: Picard, Love Victor, I Want You Back, Moonshot, and Fall.
Dermot Mulroney as Detective Bailey
Dermot Mulroney is one of the bigger new-name actors joining the cast of Scream VI. Mulroney plays Detective Bailey, the father of Sam and Tara's roommate Quinn, who joins forces with the main characters when the Ghostface murders become more personal.
Mulroney has quite an impressive resume, having appeared in films such as My Best Friend's Wedding, The Family Stone, and Young Guns. In addition, Mulroney has appeared in popular TV shows such as The Righteous Gemstones, Hanna, Shameless, New Girl, and American Horror Story.
Henry Czerny as Dr. Stone
Henry Czerny is another notable name on the Scream VI cast list. Czerny plays Sam's weary therapist who isn't very good at his job, especially since he's already suspicious of his new patient and has bought into the online conspiracy theories about her.
Czerny has been appearing on-screen since the late 80s and has appeared in countless hit films and TV shows such as Mission: Impossible, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The A-Team, Sharp Objects, Revenge, and Ready or Not. He is also set to reprise his Mission: Impossible role in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1.
Jack Champion as Ethan
Jack Champion plays Ethan, Chad's awkward roommate who struggles with socializing with girls despite Chad's best attempts to get him to socialize. Unfortunately for him, Mindy becomes quite suspicious that he might be Ghostface, despite all the evidence that he is innocent.
Champion broke out in a big way with his scene-stealing role as Spider in Avatar: The Way of Water, which he filmed all the way back in 2017 and 2018, which explains why he looks quite a bit older in this film.
Liana Liberato as Quinn Bailey
Liana Liberato plays Quinn Bailey, the roommate of Sam and Tara and Detective Bailey's daughter. She claims to be 'sex-positive' and brings plenty of young men over for hookups much to Sam's annoyance. Despite this, she also has formed a strong bond with the sisters and opens up to them about losing her brother.
Liberato is known for her role as Annie Cameron in the drama thriller Trust. Her other movie credits include Erased, Free Ride, Haunt, The Best of Me, Measure of A Man, and To The Stars.
Devyn Nekoda as Anika

Nekoda is most known for her role as Riley in the hit Netflix series Ginny & Georgia. She has also appeared in films and shows such as Utopia Falls, Backstage, and Sneakerella.
Josh Segarra as Danny
Josh Segarra plays Danny, Sam, Tara, and Quinn's cute neighbor, who Sam likes to watch through the window. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Sam is already seeing Danny romantically.
Josh Segarra is most known for his roles as Adrian Chase/Prometheus in the Arrow and most recently Pug in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He has also appeared in films and shows including Trainwreck, Overboard, Sirens, and The Other Two.
Samara Weaving as Laura Crane
Samara Weaving plays Laura Crane, who is an Australian film scholar who has recently come to Blackmore University to teach a class on slasher films.
Weaving previously worked with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on the horror comedy Ready or Not. She also starred as Bee, the killer babysitter, in Netflix's The Babysitter films, and in the second film starred alongside Jenna Ortega. She has also starred in films and shows such as Babylon, The Valet, Nine Perfect Strangers, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Hollywood, and Snake Eyes.
Tony Revolori as Jason Carvey
Tony Revolori plays the role of Jason Carvey, a snobby film student at Blackmore University who is obsessed with horror and has become friends with Tara.
Revolori first broke out with his role as Zero Moustafa in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. He also played the role of Peter Parker's rival Flash Thompson in the most recent Spider-Man films. Revolori's other credits include Willow, Dope, Servant, and The French Dispatch.
